I had the honour of being nominated for a Business Excellence Award—and what a night it was.
As someone who works in recruitment for the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, I don’t do this work for the spotlight. I do it because I believe in the potential of every student I meet. I believe in the power of education to change lives. And I believe in showing up—day after day—for those trying to figure out their next steps.

This job comes with long hours. With evening events, weekend open houses and tours, school visits, and nonstop emails and texts with students who just need guidance, reassurance, or someone to say, “You’ve got this.” It means missed bedtimes at home, dinners on the go, and balancing that fine line between professional dedication and personal sacrifice.
So being nominated was more than just a professional milestone—it was a moment of recognition for all those unseen hours. And even more special? I got to share it with my daughter, who came as my VIP guest.
I wanted her there for a reason. I wanted her to see what all the late nights and early mornings are for. I wanted her to witness not just a “work event,” but a celebration of what happens when you pour your heart into something that matters. I wanted her to see that hard work, passion, and commitment don’t go unnoticed—and that even when you’re tired, you can still show up for others and make a difference.
That night, sitting beside her, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride—not just in what I’ve done, but in the example I’m setting. For her, and for the many students I’ve had the privilege of helping along the way.
To be nominated among so many incredible professionals was humbling. To be recognized for work I care so deeply about was unforgettable. But to share it with my daughter—that was the true honour. My husband, family, friends and colleagues cheered loudly from the audience but watching Shae see strong women in this category meant the most.
Here’s to the work behind the scenes, to the passion that drives us, and to the next generation watching, learning, and dreaming big.
