Why the Arts Matter: Raising Creative Kids in a Busy World

August 11, 2024

In our home, we’ve always believed that the arts aren’t just “extra”—they’re essential. They’re not an afterthought or a rainy-day hobby. They are a vital part of raising thoughtful, expressive, well-rounded humans.

Yes, we cheer from the sidelines at the rink and on the soccer field. We believe in teamwork, in being active, in learning to win and lose with grace. But just as passionately, we believe in the power of creativity. We encourage our kids to find their voice, to explore their imaginations, and to express themselves—through music, drama, dance, painting, writing, or any medium that makes their spirit come alive.

Our daughter shines in the theatre, and we’ve watched her confidence and joy grow through sewing, crafting and being creative. Our son loves to draw and plays in the school band—quietly and creatively building his own unique sense of self.

The arts build empathy, critical thinking, resilience, and connection. They help kids make sense of the world around them—and understand their place in it. If we want to raise better humans, we need to raise creativehumans.

So, here’s my message to parents, educators, and communities:
 Tell kids to be creative.
 Encourage it.
 Invest in it.
Because it matters. And it will pay off in ways you never imagined.
