Serving Scholars and Supporting Those Who Serve

Pride runs deep in my family when it comes to service. I come from a line of Overholts who have proudly worn the uniform of the Royal Canadian Navy. My brother is carrying that torch today, and watching him navigate the challenges of reservist work, reg force and returning to school while in service opened my eyes to the struggles many currently serving members face when pursuing education. I knew there had to be more we could do on campus — and I wanted to be part of the solution.

That’s why I’m so proud of our Serving Scholars initiative at the University of Windsor, which supports currently serving Canadian Armed Forces members in their academic journey. This month, we’ve taken another big step forward by joining the Canadian Military, Veteran Families and First Responders Consortium (CMVF3C), connecting us with a network across Ontario and Canada committed to doing better for our military community.

Whether they are reservists, regular force members, or veterans, I want each of them to know they have an ally in me — someone who will support them in achieving their education goals. The combination of military experience and a university or college education is powerful, shaping leaders who can make a true difference in the world.

I’m honoured to help our military members make the most of every opportunity.  Thank you Lieutenant Commander Overholt, for your service and inspiring me to take steps to help our military community.
